  Visa Procedure:  

Getting admission into a US university is one thing but getting a students visa is a whole other matter. Getting a F-1 student visa can be hard to be obtain thus requires a lot of research and careful planning, preparation and a lot of guidance from experts for a successful visa application.

There are different visas for students with different courses or programs they are:

F1 Visa – this is for students who have applied to study in USA

M1 Visa – this is for the students applied for Non-academic or Vocational Studies in  USA or for training at a non-academic institution.

J1 Visa – this for the students who are as an exchange student

Before confirming your visa interview date you have to pay a fee to obtain a Visa fee receipt from HDFC Bank. When going to HDFC Bank, please carry with you a photocopy of the 1st page of your passport.

The fees payable at HDFC Bank per passport are:

1. Visa Application Fee is of  US $131 payable in INR equivalent at consular exchange rate. The fee can be paid in cash or by D.D, favoring ‘U.S Embassy, Visa Fees’.

2. Service Charge: Rs.322/- which includes VFS' service charge Rs 310/- & Bank service charge Rs12/- (inclusive of Service Tax @ 12% and Education Cess Tax @0.36%). . This amount may be paid by D.D favouring HDFC Bank - a/c VFS or by cash, in designated HDFC branches within respective regions. Please note that these fees are similar for all four consular districts.

Student Visa Interview Appointments

Non – immigrant visa applicants have to go to the U.S Embassy for a visa interview with certain documents which show that they are  financially , economically and socially tied with their country menaing that they can afford their education abroad and ties in their native country so that they come back after their education is over.

Checklist of Required Documents

The following is a list of some of the documents that you are supposed to carry along with you on the day of VISA interview:


For Principal Applicant


Interview Appointment Letter.


Valid passport with at least 6 months validity


One photograph as per specification (size 2” x 2”)


Application  Forms DS-156, DS-157 and DS-158 dually signed and filled. (Please note that a new form, Form DS-160, will eventually replace the above three forms. Please check this before filling out the forms.)


Visa Application fee (US $ 131) receipt issued by HDFC Bank


Original SEVIS generated Form I-20 or Form DS-2019, approved and signed by the University authority


Proof of payment/receipt of SEVIS Fee I-901 payment, if applicable through website


Financial documents: proof of liquid assets, movable assets, proof of immovable/fixed assets. List of property documents to be furnished when the same is used as collateral to obtain a loan or when shown as a fixed asset or as a source of income, Valuation reports of the property sufficient to pay for the entire first year of education and living expenses as well as proof of readily available funds to cover the remaining year(s) of studies. If you are being funded by an organization (Indian or American), a letter from the organization explaining what funding will be provided.


Original degree certificates along with mark sheets


Original Bachelor degree transcripts or high school diploma along with mark sheets from previous institutions attended.


Relevant test score reports, e.g. TOEFL and SAT, GRE, GMAT or LSAT.

New rules have been set by the US consulate specifically for F-1 visa they are as follows:

1)  US consulate has reduced the exchange rate  from 46 to 44 which mean that now the Visa fee receipt will be Rs 4400.
2) The Student Visa applicants from Chennai Consular District must apply for a visa appointment only at the Chennai Consulate only 120 days before the start of semester and not earlier. And, not in any other consulates. 
3)  Emergency appointments, students should apply  six weeks before the start date as indicated on the I-20 and not before.

Following procedures and rules are to be followed:

Postponement \ preponement:
To move your appointment date to some later day or a previous day firstly you have to cancel your current appointment and then apply again to whatever date you want your appointment to be on.


You can cancel your appointment only two times. After the second cancellation your HDFC Visa Fee Receipt is deactivated for 90 calendar days. You will not be able to book another appointment until the 90 days have passed.
